Lara Croft returns to action in Shadow of the Tomb Raidera new adventure in which she races to save the world from a Maya apocalypse, and becomes the Tomb Raider she is destined to be. Brought to the PC by famed specialists Nixxes Software, Shadow of the Tomb Raider features several PC-exclusive graphical enhancements, as well as support for higher detail levels, framerates and resolutions.
In this guide, we'll delve into Shadow of the Tomb Raider 's PC settings and enhancements, examining each of the game's 18 adjustable settings with interactive comparison screenshots, performance charts, and written explainers, giving you all the info you need to tweak and tailor your graphics and performance.
At a later date, via a game update, NVIDIA RTX Ray-Traced Shadows will be introduced to Shadow of the Tomb Raideradding for the very first time hyper-realistic representations of the shadows we see in real-life, with support for large, complex interactions, self-shadowing, translucent shadowing, and a litany of other techniques, at a level of detail far beyond that has previously been seen.
This massive leap forward is made possible by GeForce RTX graphics cardswhich are the world's first gaming GPUs to include dedicated hardware for ray tracing, artificial intelligence, and other features, enabling us to raise the bar for graphical fidelity in ways that were previously impossible. Ambient Occlusion AO adds contact shadows where two surfaces or objects meet, and where an object blocks light from reaching another nearby game element. The AO technique used and the quality of the implementation affects the shadowing's accuracy, and whether new shadows are formed when the level of occlusion is low.
Without Ambient Occlusion scenes look flat and unrealistic, and objects appear as if they are floating. Anti-Aliasing reduces the visibility of jagged edges, while the very best techniques remove all jaggies and tackle Temporal Aliasing, the shimmering and crawling seen on anti-aliased edges when they move or the camera moves.
In Shadow of the Tomb RaiderTAA Temporal Anti-Aliasing is the default option, though three other anti-aliasing options are also on offer, each with their own advantages and disadvantages:. SMAA: Your basic low-cost, post-processing, screen-wide anti-aliasing technique, with less blur than the previous-game's FXAAintended for minimum-spec systems. Pros: Lowest impact on texture-clarity of all options; lowest performance cost; surprisingly-good edge anti-aliasing Cons: No temporal anti-aliasing component; ineffectual anti-aliasing on Lara's hair.
TAA: A custom temporal anti-aliasing solution that's enabled by most of the game's presets. Pros: Better edge anti-aliasing than SMAA in some cases; removes virtually all temporal anti-aliasing; great hair anti-aliasing Cons: Highest impact on texture clarity of all post-process options. Pros: Lower impact on texture clarity than TAA; removes virtually all temporal anti-aliasing; good hair anti-aliasing Cons: Slightly less effective at edge anti-aliasing than SMAA; slightly less effective at hair anti-aliasing than TAA.
The set of comparison images below demonstrates each of the pros and cons noted above in a general-gameplay situation, with Lara ahead of the camera:. To make things easier to examine, let's zoom in on specific parts of the image, starting with Lara's hairwhich you'll be staring at for many, many hours, so it needs to look good:. Anti-aliasing on edges of geometry, characters and objects is up next:. All options offer acceptable anti-aliasing on edges, though SMAAT2x takes the lead when you factor in its temporal anti-aliasing component that stops those anti-aliased edges from shimmering, crawling and flickering.
Finally, let's look at the fabric of Lara's top to see how the available anti-aliasing techniques affect the clarity of textures :. Regardless of the resolution, TAA and SMAA4x blur to such a high degree --in an effort to reduce aliasing-- that the dimples on Lara's shirt, and grooves on her belt are impossible to perceive.
Similarly, detail is lost throughout the scene, with the clarity of literally every other game element greatly reduced. Plus, it fared well in our other tests, too. With the data, opinions and examples presented above, which anti-aliasing option would you select? The Digital Foundry GPU power ladder is simple: it ranks all current graphics cards on the market from most powerful to least powerful.
Our ranking is based on our comprehensive real-world testing in nine modern and legacy games; no synthetic benchmarks. Each game was tested at highest settings with an overclocked high-end CPU. If you want to see more in-depth performance figures and see how we tested, you can find links to our full reviews and benchmark pages. This includes our current picks for the fastest graphics card, the best value graphics card and the best budget GPU, plus recommendations for specific screen resolutions and more.
This tier contains the best consumer graphics cards on the market, all the way up to the four-figure RTX Ti. The RTX Ti is the fastest consumer graphics card on the market by a significant margin. The Titan RTX is a bit faster, but that workstation card is twice as expensive.
As well as possessing an immense amount of raw horsepower, the Ti also comes with hardware-accelerated real-time ray tracing RTX and deep learning super sampling DLSStwo forward-looking features that are presently only supported in a handful of games. While the RTX Ti is a strong card, its four-digit price tag keeps it out of consideration for all but the most deep-pocketed PC builders.
This card replaces the RTX at the same recommended retail price. This card has been replaced by the RTX Super, but stock is still widely available and temporary price reductions mean the card is still a viable option. It also has more video memory than any other consumer GPU, making it a strong choice for mixed workloads, like those involving scientific compute tasks or video rendering. Expect to be able to stretch to 4K in many titles, but p or high refresh-rate p is the sweet spot.
The card is ideal for p and p gaming, but 4K is also within reach with just a few settings tweaks. As with other RTX cards, hardware-accelerated ray tracing and deep learning super sampling DLSS features could add value if you play games that support them. The card burns through more power than its little brother, the RXbut does scale better to higher resolutions thanks to its improved performance.
Still, RTX cards are still available in wide numbers, and new price drops may make them a good value choice — just check Super prices too! That makes this card a more future-proof option than its predecessor. However, the RTX remains on sale at a lower price, providing a better price to performance ratio — at least in the short term. This competitive tier performs well at p and p, without the need to reduce detail settings in all but the most demanding games. The RX is another new card from AMD, using a 7nm process and the advanced RDNA architecture to provide excellent p and p performance for a reasonable price.
The Vega 64 does run hotter and louder than its little brother, the Vega 56, so finding a model with a decent cooling solution is worthwhile. Sadly, Vega 64 stocks have nearly run dry, making this card a difficult long-term option to recommend.
It performs well too, particularly in newer games, with solid results at p and p. The Vega 56 is one of best AMD cards for the money if you can find it in stock, offering solid mid-range performance without so much of the heat and noise that characterises the Vega This card is a reasonable choice for high-refresh rate p gaming, or maxing out a p 60Hz monitor without sacrificing on graphical fidelity.
This new tier is formed by a trio of new cards from Nvidia and AMD. That results in a cheaper card overall, able to beat out the GTX in modern titles but fall behind in older ones. The RX competes against the GTX in the lower mid-range, offering strong p performance and reasonable p results as well. Meanwhile, the GTX is a bit of a stinker, largely offering worse performance than the similarly priced RX The RX is the best value graphics card for p gaming, beating out the GTX by a small but significant margin and often appearing at a lower price.
This graphics card is barely outperformed by the RX on aggregate, but both cards can take the lead in certain games — with Nvidia hardware doing best on DX11, while AMD have the advantage on DX12 and Vulkan titles.Home Discussions Workshop Market Broadcasts. Change language.

They have a different developer now and probably used a different engine which is a shame because Crystal Dynamics Foundation engine has the best lighting in the buisness. I noticed the same thing tbh, to see the system requirements are higher kind of just killed my mood entirely. Originally posted by ChickenBalls :. Michal View Profile View Posts. Look like engine from last Hitman game. Yea I'm with you on this.
The visuals in the screenshots looks We'll have to wait and see the gameplay footage and compare it with ROTTR and then we'll get a clearer picture A step back?!!
It's light years from ROTTR and i'm really worried about it, judging the poor models of Deus ex i don't know what to expect. These screenshots are crap, they look worse than the definitive edition of TR for consoles.
Besides Lara seems to have fat cheeks in the screenshot with piolet. What a crap, they were supossed to reveal the game and they showed a damn CGI movie instead.
Same as TR Originally posted by matrizdedolor :. Looks uglier than Rise. Originally posted by TemmieNeko :. Not only the lightning, the tessellated object looks not as good as previous games.Home Discussions Workshop Market Broadcasts.

Rise of the Tomb Raider Graphics & Performance Guide
Graphics look washed out compared to Rise of the Tomb Raider. Other issues as well. The hardware is the same. Shadow looks washed out with muted colors and the detail is just not to the quality of what Rise did. Maybe they will fix this with patches in the future and optimize it better? I don't know if the console versions look as washed out as the PC version. But, so far, it looks very blah. What we saw in the 'gameplay footage' and the 'gameplay trailers' that were at the various events and online are NOT what the game looks like when we're running it - even at max detail!

I have played all 3 new Tomb Raider and the Shadow had the very best Graphics :.
Also one thing is not perfect in your settings. Last edited by Damien ; 12 Sep, pm. I will play with those settings you mentioned. Thanks, Damian!Shadow of the Tomb Raider – PC Min vs. Max Detailed Graphics Comparison
Mepho View Profile View Posts. Nothing will change unless the game is made worse than it looks. Anti-Aliasing fixes jagged edges, nothing to do with colors or textures.

DarkVoyager No, they released 10 separate screenshots of gameplay. Yeah mm but screenshots of gameplay tells nothing. Gameplay footage of the game tells more. From what I saw there really isn't any jumps, unless minute, which is pretty plausible this late in the generation. Either way, I'm still ready for the next adventure. Me too.
This is gen barely did something revolutionary with the Nemesis system from the Mordor being the exception. Powerful CPUs to me are a must for next gen or we'll still be playing games that at their core are from the 7th generation of consoles.
Stay woke we are still in 7th gen just p and paid online no custom soundtracks maybe we are in semi gen. Play GOW. I have rig with a gtx and my mind is absolutely blown by the gfx of that game!! It's insane just how good modern games look, I think this game looks fabulous but I am not so sure about the tone of the game insofar as it seems like she is quite a ruthless killer this time around.
Looks the same. Doesnt matter to me anyway. Im not giving them a dime until all the dlc is on disc with a complete edition. These fools have a whole strategy laid out for dlc starting day It might have microtransactions too. If so, im not buying it at all. Sure theres DLC but its done after the game has been out. Theres day 1 dlc as well as a season pass available for preorder.
Thats how i know. Tombs are DLC too. Thats BS. DLC is cool if its done correctly after release. Not when its designed to keep people paying into the game every month. I remember those outfits in the 2nd title. Crystal Dynamics were working on the avengers so they didnt have anything to do with the development either. DivineAssault There isn't day one dlc. I don't really like this idea and will just wait 12 months and get the dlc in a sale.
