That is, download the ISO from Microsoft, use the Windows 7 key from a bare install and it will recognize the proper license type and install accordingly. I edited it to correct. As per norm nowadays they created a recovery partition on the disk but I can't get to it. The previous IT guy here didn't bother creating the rescue media from the recovery partition so I am left with a valid windows 7 cal and no media. I found this link on the web and thought I would share it just in case other people were in the same state as me.
You can also take a Windows 7 disk and unlock all versions. That way you only have to hang onto 1 disk image. Luckily we've got Dell and their recovery discs - which is great. However, I did still download the ISOs So thank you for those.
Lenovo is a strange beast in how they load the OS, it is all proprietary and allows for no modification. On top of that, you can't use one set of disc for one model on another model with guaranteed success, and if it does work and load, chances are you will have driver issues that for what ever reason you cannot over come. The new pro systems ship with disc, but even if you order a Win7 unit, it only comes with the Win8 disc. If you happen to have a machine that is the same model? It only checks to make sure the right bios is installed and it will authenticate as a valid copy.
Also, i want to add that none of the solutions listed besides mine of course will activate. I entered the key from the COA and it failed to authenticate so I had to do it manually via their telephone support system. It authenticated without any issues over the phone and is currently downloading all the windows 7 patches.
It picked up all the device drivers without any issues but then I would expect it to do so for Lenevo, Dell, HP etc. In fact it may be better than having the original recovery disc's from Lenovo as it doesn't have all the bloated software that OEM's decide to install for your convenience.
